Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges can help improve the function and appearance of your teeth. They are strong, durable and look just like your natural teeth. Crowns can be used to repair broken or decayed teeth and bridges can be used to replace missing teeth.

What Are Crowns?

Crowns, also referred to as “caps”, provide a full coverage over top of your existing tooth. They can be made from a variety of materials, including metal and porcelain. Patients typically prefer porcelain crowns as they can be matched closely to the shade of your existing teeth, making them almost indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Placing a crown typically takes two visits to our office. At the first appointment, your tooth will be prepared and an impression will be taken. We will send this impression to a dental lab in order for your customized crown to be fabricated. In the meantime, we will fabricate a temporary crown that you will go home with that first day. At the second appointment, we will ensure that your permanent crown fits perfectly and you are happy with its appearance before cementing it in place.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are similar to crowns, however they are used to replace missing teeth. Bridges are made of two or more crowns that are attached together and cemented onto your natural teeth. The preparation process is typically the same as crowns. We will prepare your existing teeth and take an impression so that your customized bridge can be made at a dental lab. In approximately one week, we will schedule a second appointment to place your dental bridge! You’ll receive a temporary bridge until your permanent one can be cemented into place.

How To Ensure The Longevity of Your Crown or Bridge

A common misconception is that once you have a crown or bridge, you can no longer develop a cavity on this tooth. This isn’t true. In order to ensure that your crown or bridge lasts many years, it should be cared for in the same way as your natural teeth. Excellent oral hygiene, including brushing after meals and flossing at least once a day, is important. We will also provide you with some homecare tools to help clean underneath your bridge.
