Preventative Care

The best way to help our patients avoid the discomforts of tooth decay or gum disease is by educating them on the importance of following a healthy oral hygiene regime. Our team is full of information that they would love to share!

Did you know that small cavities are reversible with excellent oral hygiene? This is one of the reasons that we recommend regular check-ups. If we spot a small cavity we can help educate you on how to reverse it or prevent it from getting larger. This can potentially prevent you from needing a filling now or in the future.

Hygiene Appointments

Regular hygiene appointments (cleanings) are important in order to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. During a cleaning, harmful bacteria are removed in order to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
After a thorough dental exam, we will be able to recommend how often cleaning and check-up appointments should be scheduled, according to your dental needs.

Are you looking for a new dental office in Stratford to take care of your family? We’re gladly accepting new patients and look forward to meeting you! Preventative Services

Scaling

Scaling is an essential part of your dental appointment where our team will remove plaque and calculus buildup that is too hard to remove on your own. This treatment helps to prevent cavities and gum disease from developing.

Polishing

At the end of your hygiene appointment, you will have the option to have your teeth polished. The purpose of this treatment is to remove any remaining stain.

Patient Education

An important part of your dental appointments is the chance to talk with our team about your oral health. We will take any opportunity to educate our patients on how best to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is an effective method to help to strengthen your tooth enamel and prevent cavities from developing. It can also stop cavities from getting larger or reverse early cavities. We have a variety of fluoride treatments available at our office.

What Causes Cavities

Cavities, or tooth decay, occur when there is sugar (from food or drinks) that remains on your teeth. Everyone has bacteria in their mouth that will convert this sugar into acid and over time, this will weaken the enamel on your teeth and cause cavities. Certain factors contribute to whether patients develop cavities:

  • Diet high in sugar
    • Snacking on sugary or acidic foods
    • Sipping sugary drinks (coffee/tea, pop, juice)
    • Chewy, sticky foods
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Genetics
  • Dry mouth

Cavities are often asymptomatic until they are quite large. We would prefer to catch and diagnose cavities when they are small and easily treatable. The best way to do this is to have regular check-up appointments with x-rays taken.
